The World Series opens Friday night in Milwaukee with a matchup that guarantees a first-time champion: the Brewers host the Tampa Bay Rays, and neither franchise has won a title. It is the first Series since 1980, when the Phillies beat the Royals, in which both teams are chasing their first championship, the Associated Press reported.
Game 1 starts at 8 p.m. ET. Our scoreboard data feed gives Milwaukee a 62.8% chance of winning it, a pre-game projection and not a forecast of the outcome.
How the Rays got here
Tampa Bay beat Cleveland 7-3 in Game 6 of the American League Championship Series on Monday to reach its third World Series in 29 seasons. The Rays had to come from behind. They lost Game 1, then trailed the Guardians 2-1 before they won three straight games. Freddy Peralta, the ALCS MVP, gave up one run over 5⅓ innings in the clincher, and Junior Caminero and Yandy Díaz each hit a two-run homer. Díaz had promised a win the day before.
The Rays also swept the Yankees in the Division Series. Cleveland’s World Series title drought now stands at 78 years.
Where the Brewers stand
Milwaukee swept the Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and reached its first World Series since 1982, a run we covered in our report on the Brewers’ NLCS sweep.
